WHAT IS COUNSELING?

Counseling is the means by which one person helps another person through purposeful conversation. Professionally trained counselors work with clients on strategies to overcome obstacles and personal challenges they are facing in life that are causing them emotional turmoil that hampered their development; such as family or relationship problems; overwhelmed stress from work; health challenges and emotional pain.

In counseling,

  • It offers a way to gain perspective on your behaviors, emotions, and relationships.
  • It provides a means to express your feelings and identify pattern of thinking.
  • It helps develop communication skills to deal with conflict and frustration.
  • It is a means for addressing pain, working through loss and adding meaning to life.

MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT COUNSELING

MYTHS FACTS
Counseling is only for people who have serious emotional problems. While counseling does help those with who have a crisis or emotional problems, it is also intended for:
  • Couples who wants stronger relationship.
  • Individuals who have difficulty with self-esteem and communication.
  • Individuals having difficulty in stress management.
MYTHS FACTS
Seeking counseling is a sign of personal weakness. It takes courage to explore sensitive feelings and painful experiences. Individuals who seek counseling are taking the first step in resolving their difficulties, and this requires a lot of strengths.
The counselor will tell you what to do and how to fix  your problems. Counseling is not a quick fix cure to your problems. The counselor is there to help you explore your feelings, thoughts, and concerns, to examine your options, and to assist you in achieving your goals.
The counselor cannot understand you unless he/she has had similar experiences or is of the same background. Counselors are trained to be sensitive to and respectful of individual differences, including the specific concerns of students with regard to gender, racial/ethnic, cultural, religious, age, sexual preference/orientation, and socioeconomic issues.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED COUNSELING?

Have you been feeling apprehensive lately? Overwhelmed stress due to work, family issues, self-esteem, internal conflicts, and relationship and communication problems that does not seem to improve over time or already losing your grip on them? Or persistent feeling of sadness, low mood, and unhappiness due to dissatisfaction with self or others? Under such conditions, some days it may feel like you need to speak to someone as soon as possible, but then the next day you feel OK and the thought of speaking to someone goes away. However, the issues that made you feel stress, anxious, or sad are still there, and you inevitably feel them again in the next few days, unless they are addressed. Book your counseling session now if you feel yourself having issues that seems to affect your mental well-being or your relationships with others.

HOW CAN MAKE THE MOST OUT OF COUNSELING?

Successful counseling is a joint process requiring your motivation and active involvement. The more actively involved you are, the more effective counseling will be for you. Therefore, it will be especially important that you have chosen to come, and willing to come, rather than someone else telling you to go because you need counseling.
